Last night HBO aired two films of a four-part documentary series titled “The Weight of the Nation” which addresses the serious obesity epidemic of our nation. Each of the compelling films features case studies, interviews with our nation’s leading experts, and individuals and their families struggling with obesity. In addition to the four documentary films, there is also a three-part series for families, 12 bonus shorts, a social media campaign, and a nationwide community-based outreach campaign to support the initiative. The goal–to raise awareness of the complexity obesity so that we can confront it and begin to take control and create solutions for change. Some major players were involved in bringing this campaign to life including the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.
